Williams Stadium, home of Liberty’s football program since 1989, provides Flames Nation a truly outstanding game day experience. The on-campus football facility has been the site of some of the most memorable moments in program history.
The stadium opened on Oct. 21, 1989, when the Flames thrilled Liberty’s Homecoming crowd with a 37-18 victory over Towson State. When the stadium opened midway through the 1989 season, the facility’s seating capacity was 12,000.
The stadium experienced a major facelift prior to the 2010 season with the installation of more seating and the five-story Williams Stadium Tower. The seating capacity expanded to 19,200, while the Tower provided Liberty Athletics with 18 luxury suites, a full media center, and expanded concessions and restrooms for the West side of the stadium. A new AstroTurf playing surface was also installed for an improved playing experience for Liberty’s football players.
In preparation for Liberty’s first season of competition at the FBS level, the stadium once again transformed prior to the start of the 2018 season. The latest expansion project brought the seating capacity up to 25,000 with a new upper deck coming to the East side of the facility, plus added more concessions and restrooms to service the student body seating area of the stadium.
Fans also saw a new scoreboard, more food options, road improvements and new bus loading and unloading areas to improve road and foot traffic. The expansion plan also included for new data handling facilities to improve cell phone performance at the games, camera platforms, and a new gateway entrance feature.
During Liberty’s three decades of competition at the FCS level, Williams Stadium became one of the most feared on-site facilities in the country. Liberty annually ranked inside the Top 10 in the country in home attendance, helping the Flames capture eight conference titles.
