Nedrick Takes 5th in NCAA Discus Final with ASUN-Record 203-2 Heave

    Jun 9, 2023 | Austin Texas | Track & Field

Liberty’s Kevin Nedrick put an exclamation point on his collegiate career, Friday evening during the 2023 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium. He reached an ASUN-record 203-2 for fifth place in the men’s discus final, earning first team All-America honors.

Nedrick, who becomes the first two-time men’s discus All-American in Liberty and ASUN Conference history, is Liberty’s first athlete to garner first team All-America honors at this meet since 2019, the last time it was contested in Austin. He scored four team points for the Flames, enabling them to finish in a tie for 47th place with Alabama State, Clemson, Drake, Fairleigh Dickinson, Kansas, Michigan State and Notre Dame in the men’s team standings.

After entering the night with a personal best of 194-5, the Jamaica native bettered that mark on five of his six efforts. Nedrick took down his own ASUN Conference all-time record on back-to-back attempts, throwing 198-0 in round two and 203-2 in round three. The latter mark stood up for fifth place in the competition, putting Nedrick among some impressive company.

The only athletes to top Nedrick on Friday were two-time national champion Turner Washington (Arizona State), two-time national runner-up Roje Stona (Arkansas), collegiate record holder Mykolas Alekna (Cal) and 2022 national champion Claudio Romero (LSU).

Nedrick’s fifth-place finish is the best ever by an ASUN Conference competitor in this event, surpassing his 11th-place showing in 2022. The only Flame who has ever finished higher in this event is Clendon Henderson, who came in third in 2008. On Friday, Nedrick joined program record holder Henderson as the only two Liberty men’s discus throwers ever to surpass the 200-foot and 60-meter milestones.

Nedrick wraps up his two years as a Flame as a two-time All-American, a two-time ASUN champion and a six-time All-ASUN thrower over three different events (shot put, discus and javelin).
