Former Liberty Flames standout guard Darius McGhee has agreed to join the Indiana Pacers for the 2023 NBA Summer League.

The news comes following the conclusion of last night’s NBA Draft. McGhee had a pre-draft workout with the Pacers, one of seven teams he worked out with. McGhee also worked out for the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors and Utah Jazz.

McGhee is looking to become the fourth Liberty Flame to make an active NBA roster during the regular season, joining Seth Curry, Julius Nwosu and Peter Aluma. Caleb Homesley, the 2020 ASUN Player of the Year, was the most recent former Flame to play in the NBA Summer League. Last summer, he played with the Utah Jazz. In 2021, Homesley played for the Washington Wizards in the NBA Summer League.

McGhee had an award-winning 2022-23 season in what was his final year playing for the Flames. The Roxboro, N.C. native was a 2022-23 AP All-American honorable mention selection and earned his third straight ASUN Player of the Year honor this past season.

McGhee was also a NABC District 3 first team selection and named to the USBWA District III team while being named a finalist for both the 2022-23 Lute Olson National Player of the Year and Lou Henson National Player of the Year awards. McGhee earned his second straight Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Player of the Year award in April.

McGhee set the Liberty and ASUN all-time career scoring records and finished his time as a Flame with 2,685 career points. He paced the Flames in scoring and ranked third nationally in scoring average at 22.8 points per game while finishing No. 2 in the country in total points (821). The redshirt senior guard led the country in three-pointers made (162, new program record),finished second nationally in three-pointers per game (4.50) and ended his career ranked second in NCAA history for career threes (529).

McGhee’s other recognitions during his final campaign included: four-time ASUN Player of the Week, ASUN All-Tournament team, Cancun Challenge All-Tournament team, game MVP of the Hall of Fame Classic, 2022-23 John R. Wooden Award® presented Wendy’s® Preseason Top 50 Watch List, 2022-23 Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award Watch List and 2023 Bob Cousy Award Watch List.

McGhee guided Liberty to its seventh straight 20-win season and a 27-9 record during the 2022-23 season. McGhee and the Flames advanced to a fifth conference title game in the last six seasons and received at-large berth to the NIT for the first time in school history. He is also Liberty’s winningest individual in program history, ending his career with 131 victories.
