Flames to Face Charlotte in 2023 Hall of Fame Series

    Jun 21, 2023 | Lynchburg Va | Men's Basketball

    Official Release

Liberty has been invited to compete in the “He Gets Us” 2023 Hall of Fame Series Charlotte at the Spectrum Center on Nov. 10. The Flames will square off with the Charlotte 49ers in what will be part of a tripleheader for the one-day event.

The announcement was made this afternoon by Position Sports, in association with the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. The highly-anticipated tripleheader will mark the Hall of Fame’s return to Charlotte following the Hall of Fame Shootout in 2021. Liberty participated in the 2021 Hall of Fame Shootout, defeating East Carolina 74-64. This will be the inaugural meeting between Liberty and Charlotte.

“We have been fortunate enough to play in some Hall of Fame events in the past,” said Liberty Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ritchie McKay. “Add that to the fact we get to play a quality opponent such as Charlotte, and it certainly feels like a great opportunity for our program.”

This year’s tripleheader will feature the following games at the Spectrum Center, home of the Charlotte Hornets:
    Charlotte vs. Liberty
    Virginia vs. Florida
    Virginia Tech vs. South Carolina

Tickets for the event will go on sale in July. On-sale date, game times, fan experience information, credentials and television broadcast details will be released at a later date.

The Hall of Fame Series, which is owned and operated by Position Sports, is a collection of multi-game, singular events that will showcase several of the top collegiate basketball teams in exciting non-conference matchups played domestically and abroad. In March, the Phoenix-based company and the Hall of Fame reached an exclusive 10-year agreement.

The Hall of Fame Series joins other previously announced Naismith Hall of Fame events, including the Hall of Fame Tip-Off, Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase, Hall of Fame Classic and Jerry Colangelo Classic.

The Flames have participated in the Hall of Fame Classic three times and the Hall of Fame Shootout once (2021). Liberty sports a 4-2 overall record in these Hall of Fame events.

This is the third strong non-conference event for the 2023-24 campaign that the Liberty men’s basketball program has announced. The Flames are set to play in a new Field of 68 Media Tip-Off event, a three-year round robin series with mid-major powers Florida Atlantic and Charleston from 2023-25. The first year of the series will be held at FAU, Nov. 30-Dec. 2. Liberty has also been invited to compete in the 2023 Myrtle Beach Invitational, an eight-team event held in mid-November (Nov. 16, 17 and 19) at Coastal Carolina’s HTC Center.
