Doan Earns 2nd Team All-America Honors with 11th-Place Steeplechase Finish

    Jun 10, 2023 | Austin Texas | Track & Field

Liberty’s Calli Doan wrapped up an impressive season on Saturday, the final day of the 2023 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at a steamy Mike A. Myers Stadium. She placed 11th in the women’s steeplechase final, earning second team All-America honors.

Running her second steeplechase in three days in near 90-degree heat, Doan posted the second fastest time of her career (9:56.83). That time put the redshirt junior from Apex, N.C., in 11th place, just two tenths of a second behind 2022 national runner-up Kayley DeLay of Washington for 10th.

Doan became the first women’s steeplechase All-American in program history on the same track where Felix Kandie earned Liberty’s first men’s steeplechase All-America certificate in 2019. Doan also posted the best-ever NCAA national finish by an ASUN Conference athlete in this event. The previous best was 13th place, achieved by Lipscomb’s Madi Talbert in 2015 and 2016.

Doan is Liberty’s first women’s track & field All-American since 2016 (Ednah Kurgat – outdoor 5K). She is now a two-time All-American for her career, also including her honor at the 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.

Doan’s 2023 outdoor track & field season previously included her second ASUN women’s steeplechase title. She lowered her own Liberty steeplechase record twice, including her 9:52.15 effort during Thursday’s semifinals. Doan also clocked an ASUN all-time record 15:51.38 for the 5K.

Doan garnered Liberty’s second All-America honor in as many days in Austin. Kevin Nedrick claimed first team All-America distinction with a fifth-place men’s discus finish on Friday.

Liberty’s 2023 outdoor track & field season is now officially complete. The Flames swept the men’s and women’s team titles in their final year as ASUN Conference members before moving to Conference USA on July 1.

Several Liberty athletes will compete in meets over the summer. For example, Omari Lewis clocked a personal-best (and wind-legal) 100 time of 10.25 in his native Trinidad & Tobago on Saturday.
